Can virtual reality make you believe you are really on another planet? With all of the excitement over Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opening in Disneyland, don’t forget about another immersive opportunity to join the Rebellion. Experience the VOID virtual reality in Downtown Disney.
The VOID operates virtual reality experiences that run in several entertainment areas, including Disney Springs in Florida. This company makes high resolution games, and I’d put their graphics up against other virtual reality simulations I’ve done. They currently run Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire at Downtown Disney but can change the environment to other games. One employee said they may be developing a Marvel virtual reality!
Reservations shouldn’t be necessary, unless you have a very specific time in mind or a large party you want to book in back-to-back slots. I’d make it your first stop in Downtown Disney and find out if you can do the game right away or very soon. Groups of 2-4 people go into the game at one time.
Once you step into the VOID waiting area, you’ll fill out paperwork for yourself and any minors. There’s a minimum height of 48 inches and players must be at least 10 years old. The VOID employees will issue you a paper wristband with a QR code on it to link you to the game. Then you’ll step inside to get suited up.
The VOID offers free lockers to place your belongings into. Your gear is mostly in a backpack-vest combo that is comfortable to wear. The visor adjusts so it won’t feel heavy. You can wear prescription glasses under the visor.
Cassian Andor of Rogue One will explain the mission to your group. You’re tasked with infiltrating an Imperial base and recovering intelligence vital to the Rebellion. You’ll be disguised as Stormtroopers, which gave me the chance to use everyone’s favorite Episode IV line — “Aren’t you a little short for a Stormtrooper?” — on my 5-foot-3 daughter.
I won’t give away any plot points, but the experience envelops all of your senses. The ground rumbles, the fiery air blows in your face, and there are walls to skirt and items to grab. It’s not just a shooting game — you’ll be moving between rooms and solving a few puzzles along the way. The VOID doesn’t keep score; your success is completing the mission and gathering the intel.
After the game the staff will take your picture with their camera, or you can ask them to take one with yours. The whole experience from paperwork to finish takes about a half-hour.
Is The VOID worth doing?
I would definitely recommend it for big Star Wars fans. If you are a fan of virtual reality, this is a high-quality experience. Never seen Star Wars and wouldn’t know a Stormtrooper from a Sith? You might skip it. The Star Wars fans with me said they would do it again, no question.
It surprised me that the VOID virtual reality in Downtown Disney cost 30% less (and featured better resolution) than a virtual reality simulator I experienced in a different area. How often can you say the Disney-specific option is cheaper?
If you’re looking for a fun activity to round out an afternoon in Downtown Disney, the VOID should definitely be on your list. Maybe the force be with you!
