Today at the Destination D23 Event, Disney shared that there are big things in the works for the Disneyland Resort.
Downtown Disney Updates
First, the next evolution of Downtown Disney District is being planned. Work will begin starting in January 2022. The multi-year project to reimagine Downtown Disney District will include an even broader collection of shopping, dining and entertainment experiences. More details are coming in 2022 about what these updates will include. (But they did share that it involved removing the old AMC Theatre.)
Disneyland Hotel Updates

In addition, Imagineers are also hard at work on bringing a new DVC property to the Disneyland Hotel. This new resort property will feature elements that bring Disney storytelling to life, all inspired by characters and stories from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ classic films. There will be a newly-designed pool and recreation area, along with a variety of room types available. This Disney Vacation Club property is expected to open in 2023.
Technology Is Coming
Also announced as the news that the MagicBand+ wearable technology and “Hey, Disney!” voice assistant that were both recently announced for Walt Disney World Resort, will be coming to Disneyland Resort in 2022! Find out details about MagicBand+ here.
This will mark the first time MagicBand+ will be available at Disneyland Resort. The goal will be to enhance the guest experience with hands-free convenience for Disneyland Resort guests. (And as someone who just visited the Disneyland Resort after visiting Walt Disney World for so many years, I kept looking for my MagicBand on my arm!)
In addition, The “Hey, Disney!” voice assistant will work alongside Alexa on Amazon Echo devices and also will begin rolling out to guest rooms across the Hotels of the Disneyland Resort.
Other Updates for the Parks
Returning in 2022 will be “World of Color” and “Fantasmic!” to the Disneyland Resort! Also returning will be the “Main Street Electrical Parade,” which will return to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
Plus, this week, Disney has already announced that there will be an update for Mickey’s Toontown at Disneyland Park. Imagineers are working to reimagine the land with some all-new experiences for families and young children that will feature new play experiences, as well as open, grassy spaces to enjoy in 2023! More details can be found here.
