\u201cHoward\u201d is the story of Howard Ashman, a writer of Disney lyrics.\u00a0 This Disney+<\/a> documentary by Don Hahn, producer of Beauty and Beast, showcases video footage, audio, and new interviews with those involved in the making of these Disney classics.\u00a0 The style of the documentary is different than most- unless you’ve seen Hahn’s other documentary “Waking Sleeping Beauty<\/a>“.\u00a0 At no point is there a direct interview shown.\u00a0 Instead, Hahn overlays new audio interviews with older media laced with video and audio uncovered from the production process.\u00a0 Hahn takes the audience on a journey of Ashman’s life.<\/p>\n

Early on in Howard’s life<\/h3>\n

Hahn went back to the early years of Ashman\u2019s life by interviewing his family and gathering pictures.\u00a0 Because of this, we get to see and hear about how Ashman grew up.<\/p>\n

Spoiler Alert: Howard Ashman didn\u2019t begin his career working for Disney.\u00a0 Rather, his career started in New York City.\u00a0 While writing and directing musicals he met Alan Menken, a name that should be familiar to many Disney fans.\u00a0 Together they collaborated on several Broadway musicals.\u00a0 It should be mentioned that Menken was the composer of all the new music in \u201cHoward\u201d.<\/p>\n

Howard’s Connection to Disney<\/h3>\n

Howard\u2019s first involvement with Disney was for \u201cOliver and Company\u201d.\u00a0 But where things took off was \u201cThe Little Mermaid\u201d.\u00a0 Howard Ashman and Menken wrote all the songs for the film, winning multiple awards.\u00a0 As a result, Disney asked the pair to help out on \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d which was struggling.\u00a0 They also pitched the idea of \u201cAladdin\u201d, writing the script and songs for a movie that would be released after Ashman\u2019s death.\u00a0 Both films would go on to win multiple awards.<\/p>\n

What makes this worth watching?<\/h3>\n

If knowing more about some of your favorite Disney songs isn’t enough of a reason, then getting to watch and listen in to the creation of these songs is pure joy.\u00a0 One of my favorite scenes starts off the movie as the audience is watching and listening to Ashman coach the actors and actresses through their performance- which is being recorded alongside a live orchestra.\u00a0 It made chills run up and down my spine to hear the famous opening song to \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d, followed by applause from their fellow actors, and then the chilling statement from Hahn \u201cAnd what we didn\u2019t know was that in nine months Howard would be gone”. And that\u2019s all before the opening title.<\/p>\n

Overall, this film is one that every Disney lover will enjoy.<\/p>\n
