Once you enter the park, there are lines for food, rides, shows, and to meet the characters. On busy days, those lines can get quite long, which can be difficult, especially if you are traveling with kids. In our many adventures to the lands and seas of Disney, I have accumulated a rather extensive screen-free bag of tricks to keep my children (and myself!) occupied while we wait for our next adventure to begin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-62152\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_6980-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_6980-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_6980.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Lines to go through security, entering the Magic Kingdom<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Snack.<\/strong>\u00a0 Hungry people are grumpy people.\u00a0 Keep a few snacks in your bag, or stop by a food cart on your way to a long line to pick up something to snack on.\u00a0 Make sure you also throw in a few wet wipes if your snack is messy (if you haven&#8217;t yet given your 3 year old a Mickey ice cream bar, take my word for it, you are going to need lots of wet wipes!)\u00a0 Almost all ride and show lines at the parks have garbage cans when you get close to the actual attraction, so you can toss your trash there.\u00a0 I like to also keep an empty ziplock bag in my purse for leftovers (although I haven&#8217;t tried that for ice cream; probably not a good idea).<\/li>\n<li><strong>I Spy.\u00a0<\/strong> Yes, the age old game.\u00a0 I spy, with my little eye, something ______________ (insert a color).\u00a0 The other people then have to take turns asking yes\/no questions or guessing things they can see that are that color.\u00a0 This is especially great for reinforcing color recognition with the preschool set, but older kids enjoy the guessing aspect as well and can take turns being the spy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Numbers\/Letters.\u00a0<\/strong> My 3 year old loves to play numbers, a variation on I Spy where you search for a specific number.\u00a0 Recognizing numbers by sight is new for him, and he is happy to choose the number we are searching for.\u00a0 The first person to spot that number (or letter) gets to choose the next number to search for.\u00a0 This can be great math reinforcement for older kids.\u00a0 Instead of just finding the number 100, they can find enough numbers to add (or subtract, multiply, or divide) up to 100.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plan.<\/strong>\u00a0 What are you going to do next?\u00a0 Get out the map (in the parks) or navigator (on board) and allow each person to pick what they most want to do that day, then put together a plan to make one wish happen for each person.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I&#8217;m Going to Disney.<\/strong>\u00a0 This is an alphabet and memory game (but don&#8217;t tell&#8230; half the fun is to keep them guessing why they can or can&#8217;t come along!)<br \/>\nLeader:\u00a0 &#8220;I&#8217;m going to Disney and I&#8217;m taking along some apples.\u00a0 Would you like to join me?&#8221;<br \/>\nPerson 2:\u00a0 &#8220;I&#8217;m going to Disney and I&#8217;m taking along apples and\u00a0 __________.&#8221;\u00a0 (Here the next person has to fill in something that starts with &#8220;B&#8221;.\u00a0 If they don&#8217;t guess something that begins with B, they can&#8217;t come along).\u00a0 Let&#8217;s say this person guesses a bear.<br \/>\nPerson 3 (or back to the leader if there are only 2 of you): &#8220;I&#8217;m going to Disney and I&#8217;m taking along some apples, a bear, and ___________.&#8221;\u00a0 (This person has to fill in something that begins with C, or they don&#8217;t get to come along).<br \/>\nThe game continues listing everything that the group is bringing along to Disney that follows the alphabet rule.\u00a0 Even if kids figure out the reason why they can or can&#8217;t come along early in the game (because it does or does not follow alphabetical order), it is still great memory practice to remember what everyone is bringing along for the entire alphabet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-62151\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_5194-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_5194-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_5194.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Lines to go through security, entering Disneyland<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>High\/Low.\u00a0<\/strong> We play this all the time at home at the end of the day as a check in to see how everyone is going, but it can be a great conversation started during the day as well.\u00a0 Each person takes a turn telling the highlight and low point of their day so far.\u00a0 My kids will often surprise me with things I didn&#8217;t realize were so important to them being the highlight of the day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yoga Challenge.\u00a0<\/strong> Most lines only have a little bit of room, and those Cast Members are good at getting people to fill in all the available space.\u00a0 There is still typically enough room for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yogajournal.com\/practice\/fall-yoga-15-poses-proven-build-better-balance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yoga balance pose<\/a>.\u00a0 Learn a few common poses (tree, eagle, mountain) and have a competition to see who can keep their balance the longest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sing.<\/strong> Encourage your kids to join you in singing some of your favorite Disney songs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Name That Tune.<\/strong>\u00a0 There are different ways to play Name That Tune.\u00a0 You can sing part of a song and they have to tell you what movie or show it is from.\u00a0 Or you can sing part of a phrase and they have to fill in the blanks:\n<ul>\n<li>The circle of ________________<\/li>\n<li>The bare necessities of life will come to _________<\/li>\n<li>There you see her, sitting there across __________<\/li>\n<li>The seaweed is always ________________, in somebody else&#8217;s ____________<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compliment Game.<\/strong>\u00a0 Compliments are free, they make other people feel good, and they help kids (and adults) practice polite conversation.\u00a0 Encourage your kids to compliment someone around them in line.\u00a0 Remind them that to be a true compliment, you need to make eye contact and make sure you speak loudly enough that the person can hear you, and use a genuine tone of voice. You can even make it a competition to see who can give the most compliments throughout the day; whoever has the highest number by the end of the day gets to pick the (last ride; snack; dinner location;\u00a0 etc).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shows.\u00a0<\/strong> Disney is great about providing entertainment while you wait.\u00a0 Take advantage of the great ride queues, entertainment, and shows while you are waiting in line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-62149\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_5159-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_5159-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_5159.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Cars Land Street Show<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Scavenger Hunt.<\/strong>\u00a0 Who can be the first to find a yellow leaf?\u00a0 A red flower?\u00a0 Someone with Mickey on their shoes?\u00a0 *We would never pick a flower or disturb a plant; the leaves in these photos were found on the ground.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-62147\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_5063-e1524579676210-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_5063-e1524579676210-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_5063-e1524579676210.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Creativity Challenge in A Bug&#8217;s Land, Disney&#8217;s California Adventure<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Creativity Challenge.<\/strong>\u00a0Pick an object and see how many different ways you could use it.\u00a0 How many uses can you find for this leaf?\u00a0 (a hat, wrapping paper, a fan, a lightsaber, etc).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-62146\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_5060-e1524579509970-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_5060-e1524579509970-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_5060-e1524579509970.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Do you like my hat?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Observation Game.\u00a0<\/strong> Pick one thing and see who can find the most.\u00a0 How many Mickey ears can you count?\u00a0 How many people are wearing glasses?\u00a0 How many cast members are within view?\u00a0 How many hidden Mickeys?\u00a0 How many people are wearing (red shirts; black shoes; Disney clothes; etc.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Read Aloud.\u00a0<\/strong> Download an ebook to your phone and read while you wait.\u00a0 (Okay, so not screen-free, but still a great way to pass the time!)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dance.\u00a0<\/strong> There is almost always music playing in line queues.\u00a0 Getting your grove on is a great way to pass the time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pick a hand.\u00a0<\/strong> It is amazing how this game never gets old for my kids.\u00a0 Keep a tiny toy in your bag (ideally, one per kid!) and play pick a hand until they find the toy.\u00a0 Then allow them to play with it while you wait. It doesn&#8217;t have to be something new each time, my kids will happily play pick a hand for toys they already own.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Once Upon a Time.\u00a0<\/strong> Group storytelling can help reinforce writing and storytelling skills and can be a fun way to pass the time.\u00a0 The first person begins with, &#8220;Once upon a time, _________________&#8221; and sets the scene with some details about the story in one sentence.\u00a0 The second person builds upon the same story with a new sentence.\u00a0 Keep taking turns telling the same story with everyone adding one new sentence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Staring Contest.\u00a0<\/strong> Yep, kids still like that, especially if they can challenge an adult to play!<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rock%E2%80%93paper%E2%80%93scissors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rock, Paper, Scissors.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 Another one that kids never tire of.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Video Interview.\u00a0<\/strong> If it is quiet enough in line (not always the case!) turn on the video and ask your kids some questions.\u00a0 Where are they, what are they doing next, what has been their favorite part of the trip so far, what characters have they met, what are they waiting in line for&#8230;\u00a0 Those video clips will be priceless once you get home.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Photos.\u00a0<\/strong> Some of my favorite trip pics are the ones I snap before we get to the big moment.\u00a0 Anticipation on my daughter&#8217;s face when she is next in line to meet Moana, my son&#8217;s nervous excitement before riding Big Thunder Mountain Railroad for the first time.\u00a0 Capture the journey, not just the destination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-62145 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_4884-e1524580726193-400x360.jpg\" alt=\"Waiting in Line\" width=\"400\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_4884-e1524580726193-400x360.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.themouseforless.com\/blog_world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/IMG_4884-e1524580726193.jpg 490w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Do you have any great ways to pass the time and engage your family while waiting in line?\u00a0 Feel free to share them in the comments below.\u00a0 I would love to add more to my bag of tricks!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Did you like this article?
