Pixar\u2019s Coco<\/em> did what no animated feature since Bambi<\/em> has done\u2014made me cry! This child-friendly approach to the importance of\u00a0family, life, and death is, for me, the best movie Pixar Animation Studio has ever produced. The movie was first released in Mexico on October 27th, the weekend before\u00a0D\u00eda de los Muertos<\/em>, and instantly became Mexico\u2019s highest-grossing animated movie ever. The\u00a0Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts) in Mexico City hosted the premiere on October 24th with the revenue of all ticket sales benefiting CECAM, the\u00a0Center for Music Training and Development of the Mixe Culture, as well as families affected by the recent earthquake.<\/p>\n

The movie was released over\u00a0the Thanksgiving weekend in the United States. By December 10th,\u00a0Coco<\/em> had grossed\u00a0$390,018,962 worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Coco<\/em> revolves around Miguel, who dreams of becoming an accomplished musician\u2014despite his family\u2019s baffling, generations-old ban on music. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events during the celebration of the\u00a0D\u00eda de los Muertos<\/em>. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector; together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel\u2019s family history.<\/p>\n

\"Coco\"<\/p>\n

Many of the movie\u2019s songs, such as \u201cUn Poco Loco,\u201d \u201cThe World Es Mi Familia,\u201d and \u201cProud Coraz\u00f3n,\u201d by Germaine Franco and Adrian Molina are real ear worms. But it is \u201cRemember Me,\u201d by the songwriting team of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez of Frozen<\/em> fame, that moves audiences to tears.<\/p>\n

Epcot\u2019s Mexican Pavilion celebrates Coco<\/em> with an exhibit\u00a0exploring the traditions of D\u00eda de los Muertos<\/em>. \u2018Remember Me!\u2019 La Celebraci\u00f3n del D\u00eda de Muertos<\/em><\/a> features\u00a0amazing artwork, including papel picado, sugar skulls, and paper sculptures, as well as pre-Hispanic items from\u00a0Mexican and Mexican-American artists.<\/p>\n

\"Coco\"<\/p>\n

The artwork, displayed inside the replica of the Mexican Pyramid, is\u00a0on loan from various museums and a\u00a0long-term exhibit.<\/p>\n

The inside of the pyramid is modeled to resemble a\u00a0Mexican village and marketplace. The marketplace has lots of great Mexican art for sale. Also inside the attractions is the\u00a0Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros!\u00a0<\/b>ride, the San Angel Inn<\/strong> restaurant, and my all-time favorite La Cava del Tequilla<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Outside the pyramid make sure to catch a show of\u00a0Mariachi Cobre<\/strong>, a 12-member band performing classic Mexican music.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

If you are interested in learning more about what inspired directors Lee Unkrich and Andrian Molina, I recommend you read Gretchen Kelly\u2019s well-researched article in Forbes<\/em> \u201cJourney to the Heart of Disney\u2019s \u2018Coco\u2019 in Mexico.\u201d<\/strong><\/a> The article takes readers on a trip from Santa Fe de la Laguna in the\u00a0Michoac\u00e1n region of Mexico (the town in which the hero of the film, Miguel Rivera, and his family live), to\u00a0Frida Kahlo\u2019s Casa Azul, and many more amazing Mexican cultural highlights that inspired the movie.<\/p>\n

Coco<\/em> is a love letter to Mexico, and I hope that it\u00a0will have a long-lasting effect on tourism there.<\/p>\n

So far,\u00a0Coco<\/em>\u00a0has won a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Motion Picture. The movie is also nominated in that same category for an Oscar; \u201cRemember Me\u201d\u00a0is nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song.<\/p>\n
