As I wrote about recently, I have been super excited about the Imagineering Story documentary series on Disney+. As a Disney Parks fan, I love being able to learn about the people responsible for creating Disney magic, and the stories behind how the various parks, shows, and attractions have been made.
Conveniently enough, around the same time the Imagineering Story premiered, I had started reading the new book “Magic Journey” by longtime Imagineer, Kevin Rafferty. From his earliest days in dish washing room in Disneyland, this book traces Rafferty’s journey to becoming one of the leaders in Imagineering, and all of the twists and turns along the way – sometimes literally!
When you see the list of attractions he had a part in developing, including such personal favorites as Tower of Terror, Radiator Springs Racers, and Toy Story Midway Mania, you know that there will be some great stories about them. He has held multiple roles in Imagineering from the development of Epcot through his last major project on Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, and one of the fun things about this book is the visual representation of that, with this sort of collage of the attractions he worked on, along with some behind the scenes pictures.
But as this is a book, it wouldn’t really matter if it wasn’t fun to read, and luckily for all of us, Rafferty is a good writer. He definitely knows how to tell a story and create excitement, and I really enjoyed reading this book.
If you like Disney history, have ever been on a behind the scenes tour, have watched the Imagineering story, or just like books, a cannot recommend Magic Journey enough. It’s interesting, well written, visual, and easy to read. Check it out, and either use it to bide your time before your next Disney vacation, or read it on the plane on the way there!
