Several years ago, booking a Disney package was a nice way to get everything done with minimal effort, but shopping for individual components was the way to go to get the best prices. This "tried and true" approach has changed in recent years. With Disney offering frequent discounted and "special deal" packages during various slower periods throughout the year AND testing packages in new areas such as Annual Passholder packages and discounted Good Neighbor Hotel packages, this particular wisdom may not always hold true. Disney's "special deal" packages now come with free components such as Free Dining Plan, Free nights, or ticket upgrades, discounted prices on packages for specific resorts, private pin codes and Bounceback Offers. Below is a discussion on some recent Disney package deals and how to best get them.

Watch For Free Dining

One of the most popular Disney packages in recent years has been the Free Disney Dining promotion. This consist of Disney's basic vacation package (room and tickets) with the option of adding a Free Disney Dining Plan. For the difference in price between a basic Dining Plan and a Deluxe Dining Plan, or Wine and Dine Plan, packages can be upgraded. This is a fantastic deal and one everyone hopes Disney will continue offering for years to come. For the last three years, the Free Dining Plan has been offered during the following dates:

• 2006: booking window from 4/4 - 6/4 for stays between 8/20 - 9/30
• 2007: booking window from 4/12 - 6/24 for stays between 8/26 - 9/22
• 2008: booking window from 4/10 - 6/22 for stays between 8/24 - 9/20
• 2008: booking window from 9/18 - 12/20 Disney Visa Card Holder offer for stays between 9/28 - 12/20
• 2008: booking window from 9/18 - 10/11 PIN Code offer for stays between 9/28 - 12/20
• 2008: booking window 8/24 - 10/24 Bounce Back offer for stays 8/23/09 - 10/1/09
• 2009: booking window 3/26 - 6/21 Disney Visa Card Holder offer for stays 8/16/09 - 10/3/09

You do not need to book the free dining plan at the time of release to get the discounted package. Those with a vacation package already reserved through Disney or who would prefer to make plans in advance, can in most cases apply a discount to a "qualifying" reservation even after a package is booked. Reserving a Disney vacation package with a Disney-specialized travel agency can remove all of the guess work. Such agencies monitor discounts, notify clients of promotions when they are released and make any changes or advance booking requests as soon as promotions are released. It's all part of the specialty.

Good Neighbor Packages

Last year, Disney began testing discounted package offers for select Walt Disney World Resort Good Neighbor Hotels. Good Neighbor hotels are just a short drive from Walt Disney World® Resort, and, as with Downtown Disney Hotels and the Swan and Dolphin hotels, limited packages can be booked directly through Disney. One of the conveniences of staying off-property is that some hotels may offer pet-friendly accommodations should they be needed. Disney's Good Neighbor hotel packages offer room, MYW tickets, and special features such as a $15 Planet Hollywood certificate, one round of miniature golf and 30 additional minutes of Sea Raycer use when 60 minutes are purchased. Ticket option upgrades are available. Options such as insurance, airfare, airport ground transportation, rental cars, Cirque du Soleil, and Richard Petty's Driving Experience can be added. Good Neighbor Hotel guests who book through Disney can not take part in Disney's Extra Magic Hours (except for the Hilton Hotel), Magical Express or Disney's Dining Plan but can make Advance Dining Reservations (ADRs) at Walt Disney World restaurants. Additionally, some form of transportation to and from Disney parks is offered (a few charging an extra fee for the service). Hampton Inn & Suites

Holiday Inn & Suites Convention Center
This hotel features a full-service restaurant offering breakfast, dinner, room service, and Kids’ Meal Program as well as an outdoor pool, whirlpool and fitness center. Rooms include either a king or two queen beds and are fully equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, hair dryer, coffee maker and in-room safe. High-speed Internet access included.

Hyatt Place Orlando
Oversized guestrooms feature high definition 42” plasma televisions, state-of-the-art media workstations, “cozy corner” L-shaped sleeper sofas, plush Hyatt Grand Beds, and wet bar with refrigerator. Gallery area features a coffee and wine cafe and cashless food center. Fitness center and swimming pool included.

La Quinta Inn International Drive

Annual Pass Plus Dining Packages

Another first for Disney this year is the offering of Annual Pass packages that include the Disney Dining Plan. These exclusive offers allow Annual Passholders to book rooms at an Annual Pass discount with the addition of a full-priced Disney Dining Plan, Disney Deluxe Dining Plan and, likely for 2009, the Quick Service Plan. Each person on the reservation will need to purchase the Dining Plan. These packages also include Magic Your Way Package benefits, but do not include tickets. Disney MYW Packages: Buy the Options You'll Use

Beyond planning to travel during off-peak times (check our room rate page for dates) and checking for discounts, the key to getting the best package deals begins with booking only the options you'll use. Below is a description of the various packages that Disney offers and individual components.

Special Notices: Disney's online check-in is now available for guests of Walt Disney World resorts and Disney Vacation Club resorts. Guest may check in at mydisneyreservation.com up to 10 days prior to arrivial. A welcome folder with your Key to the World Card will be waiting fat the designated Online Check-in area of your resort. Guests arriving at their Walt Disney World Resort prior to check-in time may now receive notification when their rooms are ready by cellphone. Notification of your room assignment (room number) can be by text message or by an automated phone call. For complete check-in info, click here.

2009 Magic Your Way Package
This is the basic Disney starter package. The components of the 2009 package include: Accommodations, tickets and special features

The following Disney Resort Hotel categories can be booked with this package: Disney Value Resorts, Disney Moderate Resorts, Disney Deluxe Resorts, Disney Deluxe Villa Resorts and Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. You must book at least a 3-night stay at a Disney resort in any Disney MYW vacation package.

A Magic Your Way Base Ticket with a 14-day expiration and choice of ticket length from 1 to 10 days (one Theme Park admission per day) is also included. You must include at least a 1-day base ticket for each person included in a Disney MYW vacation package. • Park Hopper® Option - visit more than 1 Theme Park on the same day.
  
  
• Water Park Fun & More Option - includes a specific number of "Fun Visits" based on the length of the Ticket. • 10% off the regular price of all activities including parasailing, water skiing, wakeboarding and tubing trips at Sammy Duvall's Water Sports Center located at Disney's Contemporary Resort.
• How to Guide

2009 Package Terms:

• A $200 per reservation advance deposit is required within 7 days of booking and the remainder is due at least 45 days of vacation check-in date
  
  
• Everyone in the room must be booked on the same package and ticket options
  
  
• Packages and tickets plus their options or components (including dining entitlements) are nontransferable
  
  
• Dining entitlements expire at midnight on the day of check-out
  
  
• Theme Park tickets and options must be used within 14 days of first use unless the No Expiration Option is purchased
  
  
• Visiting more than one Theme Park on the same day requires the Park Hopper® Option

Cancellation and Change Policy: There is no penalty to cancel up to and until 45 days prior to arrival. From 44-6 days the fee is $100 and from 5-0 days prior to arrival the fee is $200 per package. There is a charge of $50 per package to change your reservation under 45 days prior to arrival. Most air is non-refundable. Changes to reservations which affect outbound flights or first night's accommodations must be made at least 7 business days prior to guest arrival. Land portions of the reservation cannot be canceled without also canceling the air portion of the reservation booked through Disney. Insurance is non-refundable once deposit is paid.

Note: Changes for 2010 packages are as follows. From 44-7 days the fee is $100 and from 6-0 days prior to arrival the fee is $200 per package.

Optional Add-Ons to the Basic Package

• Updated: Vacation Insurance: This insurance must be purchased for each adult (no charge for children 17 and under) list on a reservation and includes coverage for travel delay (up to $600), baggage loss (up to $2000), baggage delay (up to $500), medical expenses (up to $10,000) and a few other emergency provisions. Two recent additions as of 11/10/08 are protection against Employee Termination or Layoff and Active Military Service such as having leave revoked or being reassigned. The cost is $59.95 per adult. If you're purchasing a package, insurance can be a good idea, but once deposit is made, it is non-refundable and must be purchased before final payment is paid. Although insurance includes coverage for loss of personal effects (as well as medical and other expenses), this coverage may already be included in your homeowner's (or other insurance) policies, and credit card coverage. Also be aware that when booking through Disney, agents will automatically include insurance in their price quotes unless you specifically state that it isn't needed. Those traveling in "hurricane season", particularly late August thru September, should carefully consider omitting insurance as travel plans are often delayed or disrupted this time of year.
  
  Disney insurance only covers Disney components. To cover all of the components, including airfare not booked through Disney try insuremytrip.com. Travelers can select from a large list of companies and can build coverage to fit their individual needs. This is also sometimes a cheap alternative, particularly when it comes to booking Disney Cruise line insurance.
  
  
• Roundtrip Air (for U.S. only): While airfare can be purchased through Disney, it's often not the best price available (but not always) and most is non-refundable. It may be a more cost effective choice to use our Airfare tips and locate airfare on your own. Be sure to give your travel agent or Disney your frequent flyer numbers to credit your account.
  
  
• Disney's Magical Express: Disney has eliminated the need to secure transportation from the airport to your Disney resort. Magical Express is one of the more recent money-saving amenities offered to guests staying at the Walt Disney World Resort. The service provides baggage transfer and handling, transportation for you and your party from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to your resort (one way or round trip available) and, for select airlines, airport check-in. All free of charge!
  
  
• Alamo® Rental Car: This is the official rental car of Walt Disney World and a component you may be offered as part of a package. Like airfare, this is also a component for which you will likely find better pricing on your own. See our Car Rental tips for more information.
  
  
• The American Idol Experience: If you've ever dreamed of becoming part of the American Idol phenomenon, now you can live the dream as part of The American Idol Experience, an exhilarating, new attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios. There are two add-on options to your Walt Disney World package.
  • Ultimate Fan Experience - $49 per person
    You will receive certificates delivered to your hotel upon check-in to be redeemed for The American Idol Experience Merchandise Pack which includes:
    • Choice of one select short-sleeved The American Idol Experience Attraction T-shirt
    • One The American Idol Experience ID Badge
    • One The American Idol Experience Award Statue
    • Reserved seating for one person at one of The American Idol Experience attraction shows.

• Golf: This option is for purchase only by Disney Resort Guests and Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel Guests, for play at any time of day. The per person rate includes greens fees, electric cart and pre-round practice balls. A special Twilight rate is also available for play time after 3:00 pm May 11, 2009 through October 31, 2009 or after 2:00 pm November 1, 2009 through January 14, 2009. Resort Guests who purchase the Twilight Rate are not eligible for the pre-round practice balls. A player may book their round up to 180 days in advance by calling 407-WDW-Golf or contacting your travel agent. Rounds are subject to availability.

Wine & Dine Plan: Add the Wine & Dine Plan to any Magic Your Way Package that includes table service dining for $39.99 per night per room. This plan includes a choice of one bottle of wine per night per room from a designated wine list. Disney's 2009 Premium Package: This package is for the Disney traveler who wants to experience the best that Disney has to offer. It includes all of the components of the Basic MYW package, plus dining, shows, Walt Disney World tours, admission to Children's Activity Centers, admission to the Cirque du Soleil, unlimited use of select recreation (boating, fishing, horsebackriding, golf, etc), preferred Fireworks viewing, and more. Guests ages three and older will recieve breakfast, lunch & dinner per person per night at selected table-service and quick-service restaurants, 2 snacks per person per night, 1 resort-refillable drink mug per person. If you intend on making your Walt Disney World vacation a trip you will never forget, this package may save you money. We would also highly recommend working with a Disney Specialized Travel Agent when booking this package. The options are numerous and a specialized travel agent will be able to ensure that you come up with a workable schedule and don't miss out on any options.

Disney's 2009 Platinum Package: This is the top of line in Disney vacations experiences. The numerous components of this package include everything offered in the Premium Plan, plus in-room baby-sitting, spa treatments, accommodations at a deluxe resort, special magical evenings, and Disney's PhotoPass CD. Once again, we would highly recommend working with a Disney Specialized Travel Agent when booking this package.
