Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor
Passholder Preview Report
by Carol Vandiver

We made a trip to the Magic Kingdom on Saturday March 31, 2007 to get a peek at the new Monsters, Inc Laugh Floor during the Passholder Preview.

When we arrived in Tomorrowland, there was no line at all in front of the new attraction (the building that previously held Timekeeper). They were letting the general public enter the stand-by line and the Passholders entered via the FastPass line. We waited in the queue area a little less than 10 minutes so while we waited, we check it out.

Stand-by enters and weaves through the queue area. FastPass holders enter and go directly to the right and walk straight towards the far wall. The door that leads to the seating waiting area is on that far wall.

Colorful banners are hung all over the room.

One of the banners explained “We Want Your Jokes” and said that we could text message our jokes to them for use in the show. It also explained that normal text messaging charges would apply and gave the number to text.

We were then ushered around through a doorway in to another “holding area” where we waited to enter the seating area. We were welcomed to the Laugh Floor Testing Facility (according to the signs) and we waited for the doors to open.

The familiar Monster’s Inc logo was painted on the doors (that had the usual warning on them to stay back behind the line because the doors opened towards you).

In several places around the room, there were video monitors on the walls, explaining again, how you could text your jokes in to the show. Most text message can only be a few characters long, so I'm not sure how you are supposed to text in your joke AND your name and hometown, but that's what you're asked to do.

As we entered we were asked not to take photos or video of any kind and were then given the usual drill about how we needed to “move all the way to the end of the row and fill in all available seats”. We did.

The show began. It was MC'd by none other than our favorite one-eyed monster, Mike Wazowski. There were 3 video screens located in front of us where the Monster’s performed. The center one was larger than the 2 on either side of it. We were shown a large canister to the right side of the stage, that was to be filled with our laughter by the end of the show or there “may not be enough power left to open the exit doors when the show is over”. So we laughed hard. Or tried to.

The monsters (2 or 3 of them that are "new", not from the movie) came out in turns, told a few jokes, entertained us with their mind reading abilities and even a shared a few jokes texted in from the audience. Roz was there, directing everything. It was done with the same interacting effects that Turtle Talk With Crush uses but when all was said and done, it can’t hold a candle to TTWC. At least that was the unanimous vote in our group.

I didn't actually time the show but I'd say it was 15 minutes long or less.

The attraction was cute and I enjoyed it, but I don't see myself being compelled to go back very often. Several times, when they were speaking with people in the audience, I noticed that the sound was out of sync. Hopefully this is a bug that can be worked out.
