The Magic Kingdom, the Rest of the Story-- 5/7/02

The Magic Kingdom, the Rest of the Story

Over the last few weeks I have taken you with me and my family as we have toured the MK, land by land and ride by ride. I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have. Today, I will just remind you of the other little pieces of "magic" that are there for the taking in the MK. These are the little known or often missed things that commando's rarely see. In fact, unless one is lucky enough to make return trips, much of the following gets missed, but it is definitely worth your while to try to squeeze a few of them into your itinerary.

While on Mainstreet, take time to watch and listen to the Barbershop quartet and get a hair cut at the Barber shop. It is especially memorable, to me at least, for junior to get his first hair cut there. Spend time in the City Hall for character greeting as well as neat picture set ups for your snapshots. Keep prowling around back there and you will find some computer video games to play and a mini theater showing old Disney cartoons- a wonderful spot for a nap or to breast feed. Listen to the piano player at Casey Jones' hotdog stand, pet the pony at the fire station, get a silhouette cut at the Crystal store, and don't forget to watch the 3 o'clock parade.

While in Adventureland, get autographs from the characters at the Oasis. Watch the parrot over the door at Pirates of the Carribean and listen to what he says-he's cute. And don't forget to have a dole whip while you are here!

While in Frontierland, don't just sit at Aunt Polly's while on Tom Sawyer's Island- explore it yourself, you'll be glad you did. Meet and greet the characters in the courtyard at Splash Mountain, have a snack at the Mile Long bar and watch the heads on the wall- they do more than just hang around! Oh yes- don't forget that 3 o'clock parade- you can catch it from here, too.

While in Liberty Square, read the plaque on the tree, shop in the Christmas store, and read the tombstones and crypt stones at the haunted mansion. Look for the wedding ring embedded in the concrete and the hoof prints of the ghost horses. Have your picture drawn outside of the Hall of Presidents. It's harder to catch the 3 o'clock parade from here, but do try not to miss it.

While in Fantasy land, be sure to meet and greet characters at Ariel's Grotto and in the old queue line for 2000 Leagues under the Sea. Watch Merlin pick a King for the day, sit by the wishing well and just listen... Go to the rose garden and hear Belle tell a story, sit in front of the Castle and watch the performances that happen all day long. Look closely at the mosaic and find the pieces that are real gold and gemstones. You can't catch the 3 o'clock parade from here, though.

While in Tomorrowland, play with the rolling sphere fountain, read the paper of the future, talk on the phone in the booth, and check out the robot. If you are lucky, the talking robot will come by while your're here- he's very cute. Catch some very good performances from the stage in this area (between Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear). I saw KC and the Sunshine band there at my grad night in 1978, but I'm just sure there have been better bands since then. ;-) Once again, you will not really be able to see the 3 o'clock parade from here very well.

Lastly, I will recommend the places we like to eat. Now as far as I'm concerned, there are no bad places to eat in the MK, these are just our traditional favorites. In general, we have a character breakfast early in the day- the menu's are the same all over but Cinderella's is the most popular. We generally go to the Crystal Palace, though. We have a late lunch/early dinner either at the Colombia Harbor house (where strategic seating can get you a very good view of the 3 o'clock parade) or Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe'. Later in the day , usually with the first showing of Spectromagic, we have popcorn and sodas. Lastly, while sitting on a bench for the Fantasy in the Sky Fireworks and the Kiss, we have hot chocolate and one of those giant chocolate chip cookies.

Also- don't forget to hunt for hidden Mickeys- they are everywhere!

If you are spending the night on property or in town and don't have far to drive- don't miss the Kiss.

Well, that's what I and my family think of the Magic Kingdom and how we play when we go. I hope you have enjoyed this cyber trip as much as I.
