Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin -- 4/16/02
When we last left off, we had just finished a nostalgic trip through the 20th century at the Carousel of Progress. The next attraction we come to is...BUZZ LIGHTYEAR'S SPACE RANGER SPIN!!!!!! Hurry up, we have to go-TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!!!!!
Hehe- I just HAD to say that. Buzz Lightyear is arguable the coolest ride in the Magic Kingdom. Housed in the same place as the old Delta Flight and If You Had Wings building, it is a prime example of a GOOD recycling of an attraction. The same cars and track is used, but the cars are now orange instead of teal blue, they spin independently according to the rider's whim, and they have laser guns with to shoot the many targets seen on the ride....and your neighbor.
This is one of a very few interactive attractions in the MK. One is drafted into the Space Rangers and sent out to fight the Evil Emperor Zurg and his minions. My husband always looks like a minion to me, so I shoot him. That is the source of most of my points. My family likes to each ride in separate cars (they hold up to 2 people and are equipped with 2 laser guns each) so we can shoot each other as well as the targets. The only draw back is that it's a little difficult to make the car spin and shoot at the same time while riding alone. Sometimes I just spin- this is fun, too.
This ride is just a hoot from start to finish. Look for when you go are the hidden Mickey's in the mural overlooking the queue line. Notice the face on Buzz Lightyear as he recruits you from his diaz- he looks alive! This is the same technology used on Madam Leota's head in the Haunted Mansion.
You rack up points by shooting targets with your laser gun. The distant ones and the moving ones give you more points, but us bad shots can rack up a healthy score when the vehicle stops in front of a close and stationary target. Just blast away!!! Don't forget to shoot things when you go through the "outer space" room, either, the lasers can get you points even though it looks like you are shooting at a cartoon. For those who remember "If You Had Wings", the outer space room is where the cold arctic used to be.
Fast pass is available here and it's a good thing. We like to get a pass, AND stand in line, because then we can ride it 2 times in a row. It's that much fun.
Come on, Space Rangers!! The Evil Emperor Zurg MUST BE STOPPED- TO Infinity AND BEYOND!!!!!!!!!!!!!
