Make Your Own Moist Towlettes
By Margaret Lewis - January 4, 2003
Instead of paying a small mint for various towelettes I make my own using Viva paper towels, my favorite products, and Ziplock snack-sized bags. Once you try it, you will find you save yourself a fortune in wipes, cleansers, fresheners, and even sunscreen.
Soothie Wipe (bug bites, sore feet, mild sunburn, chafing & prickly heat):
Good Old-fashioned witch hazel - 4 parts to 1 part purified water
Waterless Antibacterial Cleanser:
Perl Waterless Cleaner - 3 parts to 1 part purified water
Sunscreen Wipes:
Coopertone Oil Free Sunblock Lotion - 2 parts to 2 parts purified water
Eye Glasses Cleaner:
Windex (no water necessary)
What you need:
-Absolutely clean disinfected work surface such as a large jelly roll pan or edged cookie sheet.
-Non-porous rolling pin - again squeaky clean
-Purified water
-Fresh roll of Viva or other high quality paper towels
-Stainless Steel or Glass mixing bowls - clean, clean, clean.
-Tongs or very clean hands
-Non-porous fork - I use disposible plastic
-Ziplock snack-size bags
What to do:
-With clean hands or sterile gloves fold paper towels (I usually do 4 folds). Stack in 2's or 3's and place on a sterile surface.
-Mix product and water into a well-blended solution.
-Pour in pan and evenly spread solution.
-Place stacks of paper towels in the solution.
-Use the rolling pin or some other non-porous tube to evenly distribute the solution to all layers of paper towels.
-Continue to add layers of folded paper towels rolling to saturate each layer evenly until there is nothing more to be absorbed.
How to Pack:
-Have several snack bags set up and ready to go.
-Use tongs to place several towelettes in a snack bag.
-Press out all air and close.
-I make snack bags for each day. Then pack each type of snackpak wipes in a larger Ziplock. Pull them out one at a time and put them in my waist pak, purse, or backpak.
This is perfect for camping, traveling, or even keeping around the house or office.
Example of savings.... It costs pennies to make eyeglasses cleaner. A box of 20 individually packaged "Wipe'N Clear" by Flents costs $2.95 at the Walgreens.
Hope you find this tip both frugel and fun to make. Just make sure to keep everything is as sterile as possible.
