Bruce's NYC World Day Meet Report
No one else wrote anything yet, so I guess I will ;)
We all decided to meet at the McDonalds at 7th Ave (also considered Broadway
too) between 46 and 47 streets.
I got there early and walked around the Times Sq welcome center, found a
pressed coin machine and made one. Tina, her darling daughter and her
husband were outside. Tina recognized me and walked over and said hi. I'm
bad, forgot to look up photos of the people I was going to meet :)
Marie called me asking me for information where this McDonalds was. 15
minutes later, her daughter June called asking for the same info, she is
more familiar with Manhattan then her mom is :)
Ok everyone... just for the record, I am bad with names, so forgive me if I
fail to mention everyone's names who was with us :)
Tina pointed our Marie to me at the same time that Marie was calling me
again. With Marie, was her two daughters and her granddaughter
Omayra came up to us at that moment and introduced us to her darling son.
It was very cold waiting outside, Tina's husband and daughter preceded us
into McDonalds to get something warm to drink. Boy, was McDonalds crowded.
After we got our food we searched for about 5 minutes to find table for most
of us to sit together.
After McDonalds, the idea of going into the Times Sq welcome center to send
a video postcard to the group kind of went no where :(
Thanks Wendy, Marie showed us the nice banner you made for us :)
We all went to the nearby Hersheys Chocolate store on Broadway and 49 st.
Marie and her clan discovered something there that they went crazy over....
Special Dark Chocolate syrup. Donations to the Help Marie and her family
get over their chocolate addiction will be gladly accepted by me, just send
checks made out to the Chocolate And Sugar Helpers (or just make it out to
its initials CASH)
Next stop was Rockefeller Center and the tree. We took some photos of the
kids in front of the large light bulbs in front of 1221 6th Ave, aka McGraw-
Hill building. Had some photos taken of the tree and the art deco
buildings. We went underground in search of bathrooms and headed towards
5th ave and 51 st, We left Rockefeller Center by the statue of Atlas and
headed north up 5th ave towards World of Disney.
The crowds were unbelievable in the city. But we all managed to get to one
place together, a feat we didn't manage later that night ;)
When we arrived at WOD, everyone but me waited to have their photos taken
with some Disney characters, so someone else will have to fill in what
happened. :) The store was so crowded, that I stepped outside several times
to change my mind (haha).
After we all had our share of shopping, we lost Omayra and her son. Later
we found out she went home.
We headed south down 5th Ave to look at the windows and the building show by Sachs. We also lost Tina's husband and daughter. While we didn't cross 5th
ave, they did. The west side of 5th ave around Rockefeller Center was just
wall to wall people.
After we watched the building show, music and festival lights on the
buildings facade, someone wanted to go to American Girl store (was that the
name of it?) After it took is 10 minutes to make our way one block, Tina's
husband and daughter rejoined us. The line to get into that store was
around the block, and no one was willing to wait. We were all hungry and
needed to sit, so we were going to the Rockefeller center concourse to grab
something to eat and drink. So we headed west, and got split up again :)
I worked in Rockefeller Center for years, and I remember a entrance into the
concourse that they turned into a store front, so we hit the crowd again to
make it into the concourse level by 30 Rock.
We somehow managed to find each other in the 30 rock lobby and headed
downstairs to the concourse, next problem was finding tables and chairs.
Like all the rest of the table and chair vultures, we looked for people who
were getting ready to leave and take their tables and chairs as soon as they
stood up. We managed to get three tables near each other, pushed them
together, and went after more chairs for everyone to sit down.
Marie was waiting for another daughter and her ex boyfriend to show up from
Penn Station. Tina and her family and me decided to leave. We said our good
byes, and I left with Tina and her family to show them a way to catch a taxi
to take them back to Penn to catch their train.
A funny thing happened on a side street by Rock center. A police officer
was having a hard time keeping the people waiting for busses away from the
street to allow others to pass. He was really at the end of his rope, and
was yelling at the same person for the third time he said ;)
By the time we made it to 7th Ave, it was evident that they weren't going go
to make their train, so we walked all the way down to Penn Station from Rock
center.
We sat down together at one of the fast food places in Penn station and had
a little bit to eat, then said our goodbyes to Tina and her lovely family :)
