Foodie Friday: Maya Grill Review

A Dining Review of Maya Grill

I always find that the Moderate Resorts are always the least talked about when it comes to dining. So, today, I thought we could take a look at one of the options at Disney’s Coronado Springs ResortMaya Grill.

Maya Grill  is certainly an inviting restaurant with a large exhibition grill and terrific Mayan décor throughout. At Maya Grill, the essence of ancient Mexico greets you by the welcoming Mayan motifs of fire, sun and water. The restaurant has a semi-refined feel; this isn’t an On the Border-type experience.

Maya Grill is run by the same group that runs the Mexican restaurants throughout Walt Disney World, which includes the Mexico Pavilion, so they know Mexican dining. They specialize in Latin-inspired dishes, with an American flair while offering traditional platters, as well as an enticing array of Tex-Mex creations.

One of the nice aspects here is that there is usually a gentleman playing guitar, adding a little ambiance to the experience.

The atmosphere is one of relaxation. Nothing is rushed here and the restaurant itself isn’t exceptionally busy, usually.

Due to its connection with the group that owns other restaurants at the Mexico Pavilion, margaritas are exceptionally popular here, so you don’t want to pass up that margarita flight!

When Guests sit down, they are served with a bread basket, with a variety of different options. Some are more like crisp flatbread, some are like jalapeno cornbread.

On my recent visit, I tried the Tacos Durango which is a taco trio featuring one Beef Taco with Chipotle Salsa, one Roasted Chicken Taco with Salsa verde and one Cochinita Pibil taco with Pickled Onion and Carrots  served in Flour Tortillas.  This was a great choice because I couldn’t choose which kind of taco I wanted, so I was able to get all three that I was deciding between thanks to the appetizer. I very much enjoyed the three different flavors, however they didn’t wow. I also thought they were a bit small.  Granted, I know that they were an appetizer, but thought that they maybe could have included one more taco in the mix. Each taco was about the size you expect to get when ordering a taco at the Epcot Food and Wine Festival.

The one downside to Maya Grill, however comes when you are finished with your meal. I have had multiple occasions where the Cast Members were exceptionally slow to bring the bill. Keep this in mind if you are in a hurry.

My overall impression of Maya Grill is that it’s a good moderate restaurant for a moderate resort. I personally wouldn’t make a special trip to stop here, but do know some who make it a point to visit every time. However, to me, if you are at the resort and are hungry for some good Mexican cuisine, Maya Grill is a solid place to visit.
