Traveling with Boots: Best Friends Pet Care at Walt Disney World

WDW Kennels

There is a moment, when I go to open ‘that’ box, where my breath catches.  Inside sit those brightly colored, all powerful bands.  I am able to breathe again.  I am going home.

A trip to Walt Disney World is a cause of anticipation, excitement, and is slightly overwhelming for the primary planner.

Those of us with pets have the added stress of just what to do with our fur person.  If the family road trip is on your itinerary, then one option is to take your pet with you.  There are several pet friendly area options for the Walt Disney World visitor.  Today we will have a look at the Best Friends Pet Care – Walt Disney World Kennels.

Best Friends Total Pet Care has been a well-respected provider of pet services since 1996 and now offers 38 facilities in 18 states.  They have opened a 27,000 square foot facility adjacent to a 25,000 square foot dog park on the Walt Disney World property.

Located in the Disney Springs Resort Area – across from Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside at 2510 Bonnet Creek Parkway, Lake Buena Vista, Florida – the complex can accommodate approximately 300 dogs, cats, and other small pets.  A full list of accommodations options and prices (at time of writing) are below.

Families wishing to place their pets in the kennels for either the day or overnight need to make reservations through the kennel’s website (wdw.bestfriendspetcare.com) or by phone (407-209-3126).

Best Friends Pet Care – Walt Disney World is open from 1 hour before the earliest park opens until 1 hour after the last park closes at Walt Disney World.  This allows pet parents to spend a maximum amount of time in the parks while knowing that their fur kids are being well looked after.  Due to the location of the Kennels, having a car is extremely helpful for visiting pets there and required for drop off and pick up days.

Pluto’s Pup Palace

The Walt Disney World’s Kennels are a dog’s paradise and there are many options and add-ons for Canine Guests. For those staying overnight, the Kennel offers four general options.

VIP Luxury Suites: These 226 square foot suites include a 16 by 9 foot bedroom that is air-conditioned; have a flat panel television and a raised platform bed.  The remaining area makes up a private outdoor play area.  The play area is covered and is great for your pet to enjoy playtime with you or their ‘pet concierge’.  There are several added activities for guests staying in one of these four suites.  Included in the fees are: 2 toileting walks, 2 playgroup sessions, a bedtime story, a personal ‘pet concierge’ each day, and for the family, there is a webcam so that you can check in on your fur person from time to time.  For those guests staying three days or more, a ‘go home fresh’ bath is also included.  One night in these suites is $89 (resort guests discounted rate: $81).

Vacation Villas: Are a bit smaller at 72 square feet but are air-conditioned.  They are two-room accommodation with a bedroom that contains a flat panel TV and a raised platform bed.  Each villa has a 4 by 7 foot relief patio attached.  Additional activities included in the price are 1 toileting walk, 1 playgroup sessions, and ‘turn down service’ each day.  There are 14 villas in the kennel.  One night in these villas is your pet’s for $72 (resort guests discounted rate: $66).

Indoor/Outdoor Boarding: These two room suites are both indoor and outdoor.  Their indoor room is climate-controlled.  There are two sizes of indoor bedroom: 4 by 4 foot and 3 by 4 foot.  The outside patios are 3 by 8 foot and 4 by 8 foot.  During a majority of the year, dogs have access to the outside patio at all times during the day; however, in extreme heat (such as peak summer), the doors to the outside are opened 4 times a day to protect the dogs from the heat.  The larger suites fit all dogs comfortably with the exceptions of giant breeds.  Price includes: 1 toileting walk per day.  The one night cost is $48 (resort guests discounted rate: $44).

Indoor Boarding: At up to 32 square feet, these indoor, air-conditioned kennels, have a pet cot and the patio can be accessed at all times except during cleaning.  These kennels will suit medium sized dogs and some large breeds.  Included in the costs are: 2 toileting walks.  These kennels are $41 (resort guests discounted rate: $39) a night.

Chip and Dale’s Small Animal Friends

Best Friends Pet Care – Walt Disney World offers a minding service for ‘pocket pets’ as well; this includes such furry friends as hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits and ferrets.  Pocket pets need to bring their own home or cage along with all the supplies needed to keep them healthy and happy (bedding, bowls, food, and so on).

Best Friends Pet Care does not accept primates or any pets that are venomous.  This might hamper Phineas and Ferb’s next visit as Perry will have to stay home (but it does save on all of those pesky Agency related exit tunnels having to be installed in the kennel).

Boarding costs for pocket pets are based on size:

Small: $13 Standard/ $11 Resort Guest

Medium: $17 Standard/ $15 Resort Guest

Large: $22 Standard/ $20 Resort Guest

X Large: $25 Standard/ $23 Resort Guest

Grooming for Dogs and Cats

Best Friends Pet Care also offers a full grooming salon that is open Monday through Saturday (by appointment).  They offer ‘Go Home Fresh’ services for overnight guests and ‘Best Friends Pampered Pet’ packages for other pets.  Both packages include shampooing, brush out, drying (ambient drying is used, not hot, power driers), nail trim, and ear cleaning.

Additional services including tooth brushing, nail grinding/filing, nail polish, re-moisture treatment, whitening shampooing, de-skunking shampoo, and SHEDICURE (which is a process that reduces shedding).  Rates are dependent on breed and services wanted.  Please call for an estimate and appointment.
