Dolphins have always held a fond place in my children’s hearts and as a family we have always enjoyed watching Dolphin shows or movies and documentaries about these unique mammals. So naturally one of our family’s favorite shore excursions on the Disney Cruise Line is the Dolphin Swim Adventure at the Blue Lagoon in Nassau.
After a disembarking the Disney Wonder, you board a vessel that for a journey to the Blue Lagoon passing the famous Atlantis resort and many beautiful large homes located along the waterway (on our last adventure we actually saw a nurse shark swimming by our boat!). It’s a gentle ride and you are able to snap some amazing photos of the cruise ship as you pass by.
Once at the Blue Lagoon you are given a short class on Dolphins and how to interact with them. You have a choice to wear a wetsuit (my wife, children and I all chose to in April when the water was a bit chilly) and you are soon off on your adventure.
You begin your swim at the dock where you sit with legs in the water and the Dolphins swim up for introductions. Once everyone is comfortable it is time to jump in! You learn how to spin around with the dolphins, hug them, pet them, feed them, and even swim alongside them. We were amazed and how gentle and friendly the Dolphins were and how much they enjoy interacting with humans. The Dolphins enjoy playing practical jokes even as my wife found out when one of the Dolphins spit water on her face and splashed my oldest son. They also enjoy giving you a great big wet kiss on the cheek!
The culmination of the swim adventure is the push off from the Dolphins. Traveling at top speed two Dolphins push you from the base of your feet at top speed – everyone gets a turn and it is like surfing on the tip of the Dolphins nose and it’s amazing how fast these animals can go and it is quite the adrenaline rush!
After your adventure you can board the vessel back to Nassau or you may explore the beautiful island a bit more. Either way you’ve created lifetime memories of swimming in the ocean with some of nature’s most amazing creatures!
