Reviews of The Grand Californian Hotel Storyteller's Cafe The story-telling tradition is saluted in beautiful period murals depicting tall tales set in early California. The food harkens back to a simpler time with hearty home-style favorites dominating the menu.

Be Sure to Try: the Lobster Salad was superb. The lobster was cooked perfectly!

General tips: We made a reservation for a 6:00pm dinner seating. However, when we got there, the place had loads of empty tables.

MouseForLess Tip: This is pricey. No two ways about it.

Extra Comments: Our server was excellent and attentive. With the kids pizza, you have the option of simply ordering them a pizza OR letting the server give them the crust, sauce and cheese and letting them assemble it themselves before whisking it off to the oven.

I brought a party of 15 there to have the dinner buffet. The food was fine but I was shocked to find that they had charged me 18% gratuity for what essentially was one order of drinks. I had to pay $80 tip and we served ourselves.

We had breakfast here, and really enjoyed it. There are definitely not as many characters (Chip and Dale and some Jungle Book characters), but the food is fabulous. Just so you know, while Mickey waffles aren’t on the buffet, if you order the buffet, you can request them from the chef, and they will serve them to you from the kitchen (freshly made!), same went for the Huevos Rancheros. I wanted this, and the waiter informed me I could get that freshly made if I had the buffet. Cool! My son (5 at the time) doesn’t really like interacting with the characters, so he didn’t care who was there.

This is probably my least favorite of the character breakfasts. The food was very good. But they didn’t have the mickey waffles which were one of my favorites (you can order it from the menu but it isn’t at the buffet). We were there for over an hour and only about half the characters made it to our table. We waited for quite some time after we were done eating because Terk was there and my daughter really wanted to see him, but she/he never made it around!

We had a 50th birthday dinner party there in early Dec 2009. It was fantastic! The atmosphere, the Christmas Carolers, the food, were all wonderful. We are planning another large gathering this year.

What: Dinner I don’t remember what everyone ordered as we were a large group but my husband ordered spaghetti and I ordered ribs.

Approximate Price of Entrees: $30 per plate

Okay for Children: This is not a children friendly place meal wise.

Okay for Couples: I guess it’s fine for couples. if you’re willing to spend a small fortune just to eat.

Be Sure to Try: A different restaurant.

MouseForLess Tip: I’d suggest eating somewhere else.. even inside of the parks have better prices for better quality of service/food.

Extra Comments: This restaurant was just awful. We went because a friend that works at the hotel suggested it for dinner and said the prices were “great” and that it was “kid friendly” However when we finally got our table (about 15 minutes after the original time) we recieved a menu that said the buffet was $30 a plate! And then other meals were around $15 each… Please note that there are only about 4 or 5 other meals on the dinner menu total which is just stupid.

My mom also ordered these little drink cups with lights for the kids.. (2 toddler boys and 2 toddler girls) Those would’ve been nice if all of them stayed working. About 5 minutes after getting one it started to die. When we asked our waiter if he could SIMPLY replace it with a different one, he gave us a rude look and said “No you can go buy batteries for it” BUY batteries for something we JUST bought! That’s pathetic.

Also when my husband and I got our food, it was cold. And the ribs I ordered… yeah there were THREE all the size of my index finger..

We will NOT be eating here again and I advise everyone to look elsewhere for food.

(We ended up driving to mc donalds)

    What: Breakfest

    Approximate Price of Entrees: $12.00

Okay for Children: Yes! Absolutely! You and the kids will be thrilled with how many Disney characters come to visit you at your table and interact with your whole group.
Okay for Couples: Yes for the young at heart.

Be Sure to Try: The Mickey waffles, the pancakes, even the California omelette (all egg whites, roma tomatoes, and spinach) is fantastice for the health conscious.

General Tip: Early reservations are advisable.

MouseForLess Tip: Be sure to show your annual pass if you have one for a 10% discount for your whole party!

Extra Comments: This is a do not miss place for the entire family!

What: Character Breakfast – full buffet, plus they’ll bring Mickey Mouse waffles and/or pancakes to your table

Approximate Price of Entrees: $22.30 per person

Rate the following (1-5, five being the best!)

Food: 4 – the fruit was amazingly fresh; best grapes I’ve eaten in a long time, and I live in Southern California
Service: 4 – our waitress, who brought us the drinks and took orders for waffles and pancakes, seemed to have trouble understanding that my mother brought her own tea bag and only wanted hot water

Atmosphere: 5- very beautiful room that continues the Craftsman style of the hotel

Okay for Children: Yes – very kid friendly food and the characters were great
Okay for Couples: Not so much for the breakfast, but dinner here can be quite romantic

Be Sure To Try: I’m telling you – the fruit was fabulous.

General Tips: we ate at about 7:00 on Tuesday and got seated right away. About 5 minutes later, it was packed.

MouseForLess Tip: You can order off an a la carte menu instead of getting the buffet, but you’d only save a few bucks.

Extra Comment: The buffet was plentiful and varied – with biscuits and gravy, an omelet station…and braised short ribs with asparagus. At 7:00 AM. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never woken up at 7:00 AM and thought, “You know what I’m in the mood for? Braised short ribs and asparagus.”

What: Cheeseburger, ravioli with artichokes, gluten-free kids’ pizza, and gluten-free kids’ spaghetti.

Approximate Price of Entrees: $55 for family of 4, not including tip.

Be Sure To Try: Everything was good…

Extra Comments: We chose this restaurant based on past reviews and our oldest sons’ need for a gluten-free diet. We didn’t have the chef come to our table, but our waitress was very knowledgable about what items they could make gluten-free. They even brought a basket of gluten-free bread out for our son so he wouldn’t be left out of the bread-eating.

Dollarless Tip: Not sure about discounts and such, but we felt like the service and atmosphere warranted the $55 bill for a nicer dinner out.

Extra Comment: The service was EXCEPTIONAL and it was so nice to feel like they were taking care of our son with special dietary needs.

What: Lunch. I had Vegetable Soup. DH had Mushroom Ravioli. DSIL had Cobb Salad. DD had Gluten free hamburger and fries.

Approximate Price of Entrees: Not sure – DH paid. I believe that most items were around $10.

Extra Comments: We selected this restaurant because our Daughter and Grandson require a gluten free diet. The chef came out to talk to us and told us he could make almost every item on the menu gluten free. They have gluten free pasta and buns on hand. They also made the French Fries from scratch and fried them in a separate fryer. I tried one and they were excellent. They also grilled some chicken for our Grandson.

General Tips: We got priority seating, but I don’t think it is necessary

Extra Comments: This is a beautiful restaurant that was filled with families, but very quiet. You could talk and make noise, but it just didn’t seem to carry like in some restaurants. The food was plentiful and very good. The wait staff was very friendly.

What: Breakfast, the meal was a buffet, with various characters, including Chip and Dale. It had the usual buffet compliment of breakfast foods, with a few “brunch” items.

Approximate Price of Entrees: I don’t remember

General Tips: Breakfast is a character meal, the other meals are non character.

Extra Comments: With the gate to California Adventure, this is a quick place to grab a meal either on a break from the park, or on your way in.
