Reviews of Disney's Old Key West Resort This is the original property for the Disney Vacation Club. Themed as a community in the Florida Keys, this resort is relaxing and very unique. There are various buildings and parking lots throughout the property, giving guests the feel of staying at their own condo rather than a hotel room. The entire resort consists of villas in studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom configurations. Rooms boast private balconies, and beautiful views, some of a golf course or the river that both run through the well-kept property.

We love to stay at Old Key West. The rooms are huge and make going back to the room at night a real break. The resort is spread out and very quite. You rarely hear a neighbor or any outside noise which makes it even more relaxing. The pools are great and there are lots of other options for entertainment. The downside is that the dining options are not great. The bus transportation is great. We have never waited more than 10 minutes for a bus. The redo of the rooms is very nice too. If you are looking for some extra space, this is a great option.

We had the opportunity to stay at Disney’s Old Key West for the first time this past June. Forever spoiled now that my family of 5 has now been introduced to a larger unit with more privacy with multiple bedrooms, luxurious baths, full kitchen and something I thought I’d never take advantage of on a Disney vacation – laundry!

Disney’s Old Key West has a very laid back “Jimmy Buffet” feel, just like the real Key West. The rooms have recently been refurbished giving the resort a brand new feel. The main pool is full of action with a fun waterslide and lots of pool games, but the two quiet pools are very relaxing.

This is one resort, though, that I feel a car might be appreciated. While the bus service is efficient, the resort is enormous and it can take a long time to travel through the resort on the bus (especially if you catch it at the first stop as we did).

There are great walking trails for leisurely morning strolls and the resort is impeccably manicured with our room overlooking the golf course.

You won’t go wrong with a stay at Disney’s Old Key West, especially if you are a larger family looking to remain in one unit at a great value.

    Date Of Stay: April, 2008

Rate Paid During Your Stay: We stayed on DVC points.

Room Sleeps : 4 (One Bedroom)

Don’t Miss: The pool area – especially in the evening. I really enjoy the lights near the pool area. Olivia’s is also a good spot for a meal, especially if you are having a hard time getting a reservation other places.

Room Location Suggestion: If you are going to be relying on Disney transportation, you may want to request a room near the bus stops. We have never had a bad room location though, each has pros and cons.

The Mouse For Less Tip: At certain times of the years, special pricing may be available for FL residents, AP holders and even the general public.

Comments: The extra space at Disney’s Deluxe Villas is really wonderful for larger groups. We also love the added amenities that are available like the washer and dryer and full kitchen. Because we stay in a larger room, our whole family enjoys the vacation, and each other more!

Don’t Miss: One of my favorite things about staying at Old Key West is the large verandahs. Try to put aside some time to just sit and watch the golfers, or the birds. Also, the new-ish pool slide at the feature pool is really fun.

Room Location Suggestion: We requested one of the one-bedrooms that have two doors into the bathroom. Otherwise, everyone needs to troop through the master bedroom to get to the toilet. You can also, now, book a guaranteed room near the Hospitality House and the feature pool, if there are any available for your dates. We didn’t do that, as we like the quieter buildings back on South Point Road.

The Mouse For Less Tip: If you’re going for a deluxe resort, you get much more square footage for your buck here at Old Key West. Also, the cheapest way for non-DVC members to stay at Old Key West is to rent points from a member!

Comments: This is a beautiful resort, and a great way to have a Disney vacation while getting away from it all!

*** Sorry, this is a long one! I felt that I needed to qualify my ratings.

Theming: We are only moderately impressed by the themeing at Old Key West. Its a beautiful resort, but we always feel they could make it a bit more magical. It won’t keep us from returning to OKW, as we really like it there. Its a great resort, very laid back & relaxed.

Room Size: Our studio was huge. Were really impressed with the size – so much floor space. The bathroom was also big and comfortable. The kitchenette was small, but perfect for what we needed. We’ve stayed here before in a 2BR villa, but this was our first time in a studio and we were pleasantly surprised. This was a spur of the moment trip without a lot of planning & since it was just the 2 of us, we didn’t need a lot of room.

Amenities: Our studio had a huge bathroom with hairdryer & lots of drawers & storage under the sink. There was a kitchenette with coffee maker, microwave, sink, toaster, small fridge, dishes & plates (paper), glasses, mugs, silverware (plastic), can opener, sponge, & paper towels also some sugar, creamer & packages of coffee. Also includes a wall safe, iron & board, TV, ceiling fan, portable crib & I’m probably forgetting something!

Quality: We were pleased with the quality of our studio (in building 44). We had no complaints at all. Everything was in working order. The air conditioning unit was especially quiet (noisy A/C is a huge pet peeve of mine!)

Cleanliness: Our studio was spotless when we arrived. Since its a vacation club resort, we only had housekeeping mid-week, but they had provided us wit plenty of towels, soap & toiletries. We usually ask not to have our sheets changed every day anyway & we’re neat in the room, so this is never a problem for us.

Transportation: Bus service to the parks from OKW was pretty good. Our longest wait was 20 minutes and that only happened once. We averaged about 15 minute waits for the majority of our stay. Bus service going back to the resorts was spotty. We averaged 20-30 minute waits (once waited 35 minutes at Epcot) trying to get back to the resort from the theme parks. This was not just at the end of the day, although it was worse at park closing, of course.

We used the Magical Express to & from the airport and that was great, especially arriving in Orlando and riding to the resort. We loved checking our bags at the resort on the last morning o our stay & not having to think about them (or lug them) at the end of the day. Our only disappointment was going to the airport on our last day we got a regular Mears shuttle, not a Magical Express bus. That was disappointing, as it was not at all magical. The driver was very nice though & the service was excellent.

Recreation: We visited the pool twice during our stay & had a magical moment there. Our friend was staying in the studio next door with her 7 year old daughter Robyn, so we went to the pool & just put our feet in while she swam. The lifeguards were fabulous. They chose Robyn to help open the pool slide one morning. The had a special “ceremony” and she got to say the magic word & received a crown & a certificate saying she was the “Slide Princess”. That was awesome – she talked about that & wore her crown all week!

Value: This is tricky. I think the value is pretty good for the studio’s size & amenities and the resort’s cleanliness, attractiveness & friendly cast members. However…I feel like its theming is a little lacking in Disney magic and could use some updating. In comparison to Port Orleans Riverside (our usual choice), I think I’d choose POR, as we don’t need quite so much floor space, POR has a mini fridge & coffee maker as well. That is really enough to fill our needs. We also find POR’s themeing better and feel its a little bit prettier. We like to take the boat to Downtown Disney to shop & eat and you can do that from both OKW & POR.

Over All Rating: We like OKW a lot & we definitely plan to return in the future. The cast members were friendly and helpful. The food at Goods to Go was handy and quick. We liked the Conch Flats General Store. It carried everything we needed over the course of our stay: bottled soda & water, pop tarts, bread, cheese, crocs, sweat shirts, t-shirts, postcards, sunscreen, last minute gifts, & tons of other stuff. Check in was very, VERY slow, but all other services were quick. Buses were pretty consistent. Our studio was clean & in great shape. The resort was clean and attractive. We’d definitely recommend it if you need a lot of space.

Don’t Miss: On our last night, we visited the pool around 8pm after the lifeguards had gone off duty. Most of the families with kids had left and it was quiet and peaceful. We put our tired feet in the pool & it felt great. -I’d recommend chatting up the cast members at OKW. They were really friendly and interactive. We had more than one magical moment because we took the time to interact with the CMs at OKW.

Room Location Suggestion: Our studio was in building 44 – our bus stop was Turtle Pond & we had to take the internal bus to get to the Hospitality House. We were a very long walk from the main building, pool etc. I’d recommend paying for a Preferred building close to the Hospitality House so that you don’t need to take the internal bus in order to use the amenities there.

The Mouse For Less Tip: Nothing specific about OKW that I felt offered extra value. We did save a lot of money this trip because we didn’t rent a car. This was our first trip using Magical Express and we felt is saved us time, money and the hassle of dragging our bags around. We were really pleased.

Comments: Overall, an OKW studio is a good value if you need all the space & extra amenities, but we felt *for us* it would be a better value to stick with Port Orleans Riverside. When we traveled with extended family and needed lots of space, the value for the 2BR villa was great for us.

Don’t Miss: The main pool has a water slide that is great for kids and adults. The pool is also very spacious so if you have little ones, there is an area where you can swim with them, but the older kids do have a tendancy to come over. Most of the life guards were very friendly. The hot tub was great at the main pool.

Room Location Suggestion: Stayed towards the middle near a secondary pool.

The Mouse For Less Tip: Nothing special.

Comments: Was very disappointed with the transportation to the main pool and lobby. You either had to take a ‘Park Bus’ or walk. If you needed a little snack it would take at least a half hour to get to the snack shop and back. Did not like we could not get clean towels on a daily basis without paying an extra fee. Must be a ‘Time Share’ thing. Overall, I would not go back here.
