We visited Disney World in February on our last trip. We went to Animal Kingdom and rode Kali River Rapids rather early in the day. Even though the weather was warm enough for just walking around, when we got off the ride, we were soaking wet and very cold. We had to go all the way back to the room to change. Next trip, we will bring a change of clothes and leave in the lockers at the front of the park. It will save valuable play time. (Submitted by Tommie C.)

From Episode 652: Pop Century and Beach Club Family Fun

Listener Heather talks about her recent trip and she shares an interesting strategy where she takes a later flight out, stays at a value resort (on this trip, it was Disney’s Pop Century) and then makes her way to the main hotel she’s staying at for the duration of her trip. (On this trip, it was Disney’s Beach Club Resort.) This way, she gets an extra day of Disney magic, but it doesn’t cost a fortune to do so. It allows you to easily hit the ground running the next day.

Another tip for those who want to ride Kali River Rapids and don’t want to get soaked. Instead of bringing a change of clothes, go to your local dollar store and get a long hooded $1.00 rain poncho. Do the ride a couple times and just offer the poncho to someone in line – people are always eager to accept them. We always stay dry and have rode the rapids hundreds of times! (Submitted by Jim J.)

With that in mind, here is one remaining cold weather tip for you all!

When we go in the winter. We layer our clothing.
1. Wear a tank top (for women) or a T-shirt (for men)
2. Wear another shirt on top (long sleeve). Or you can wear a tee shirt over the top of a long sleeve.
3. I have a 3 in one coat I bought from Northface. It serves as a light jacket or a rain jacket and also if you zip the light cost into the rain jacket it becomes a heavy coat.
4. You don’t want a lot of things to carry in your backpack or arms
5. The object is to peel off layers and also have options of whatever the weather may be. From HOT to COLD you have a lot of choices (Submitted by Valorie M.)

You should go into the parks during Spring Break time knowing that is a very busy time and set your expectations accordingly. Know that you will not be able to experience everything you want to, Don’t worry about what you are missing. Instead, enjoy what you do get to do. Actually, this is perhaps a good attitude for any trip. Also, take the time to talk to the cast members as well they can often give you hints and are very helpful. Lastly, for goodness sake, don’t forget sunblock, frog togs, and drink lots of fluids. In addition, we’re looking for your best tips on experiencing Star Wars Weekends! Send them to info@magically-speaking.com.

Want to meet one of the Star Wars celebrities that visit during Star Wars Weekends? Did you know that it is recommended that you obtain a special FASTPASS to ensure that you get to the chance to nab an autograph? Here’s how it will work: Line up outside Disney’s Hollywood Studio’s front gate entrance before the park opens. For the extremely popular celebrities, the queue for FASTPASS usually starts anywhere between 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. For most of the other stars, you can arrive by 6:30 a.m. There will be different lines for each of the different celebrities, so join the line of the celebrity that is your number one priority to meet.

When you get to the front of the line, you will receive a wristband. Your theme park admission and wristband will allow you to receive one FASTPASS ticket. Only one FASTPASS ticket will be given out per guest and each guest must be present to receive a FASTPASS. Guests may not get a FASTPASS for other members of their party, nor may they save a place in any of the FASTPASS lines for other members of your party . Your FASTPASS ticket will have a designated autograph return time.

Once you receive a ticket, you will need to continue to wear your wristband, since it too is necessary in order to get an autograph. Do keep in mind that FASTPASS quantities are extremely limited and are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Once you receive your FASTPASS ticket, you may enjoy other Star Wars Weekends activities. When your designated time approaches, head over to the celebrity autograph location found at Echo Lake, show your wristband and present your FASTPASS ticket.

After all the FASTPASS tickets for visiting celebrities have been distributed, Disney may issue stand-by tickets, however, the stand-by tickets do not guarantee that you will get to meet the celebrity.

My biggest tip for Star Wars Weekends is to really think about your young ones (or yourself) that want to dress up as their favorite Jedi or Sith. Wearing this type of attire is hot and June can get extremely muggy. Unless you want to be stuck carrying around a light saber that your child HAD to bring…encourage those items to stay back at the room, or consider wearing lighter weight versions of your favorite character’s costumes. With Fourth of July coming up, we wanted to touch base on a few tips to celebrate the holiday at Walt Disney World

The Magic Kingdom is insanely crowded on the 4th and is the most popular of Disney’s 3 theme parks from which to see fireworks. The park almost always closes due to capacity during some portion of the day. If you can’t bear the thought of huge crowds, we have an alternate plan to experience the Magic Kingdom’s holiday fireworks. See the Magic Kingdom’s special Independence Day fireworks on July 3rd when they are also shown and the park stays open until 2 a.m. or later for resort guests. Plus, you’ll be able to see a second Independence Day celebration at Epcot or Disney Hollywood Studios on the 4th.

At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, 4th of July is one of the few times you can catch fireworks in this park, and based on past attendance, this should be the least crowded of the 3 parks offering holiday festivities.

During the summer months, if you don’t want to head back to your resort to take a mid-day break, at least make sure to experience the attractions that get you into the air conditioning. Consider shows like Festival of the Lion King and Finding Nemo – The Musical or the Conservation Station at Rafiki’s Planet Watch at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. At the Magic Kingdom, take in Hall of Presidents, Country Bear Jamboree, and Mickey’s PhilharMagic. At Epcot, enjoy American Adventure, The Seas with Nemo and Friends tanks, Ellen’s Energy Adventure (a nice, long indoor attraction) and The Land Pavilion, featuring Soarin’, Circle of Life and Living with the Land. Finally, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, enjoy The Great Movie Ride, a full showing (including the fabulous pre-show) of Muppet-Vision 3D, learn to draw at the Animation Academy, and don’t forget about One Man’s Dream. There are a ton of attractions that can keep you indoors for a long time at the parks during the middle of the afternoon that will not only keep you out of both the sun’s rays, as well as the afternoon thunderstorms.

Do a little advance planning before purchasing Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party tickets. As a general rule, the “Premium Ticket” parties are not only more expensive, but will also typically be the more crowded parties. Other dates offer a savings, so check your trip’s schedule and plan accordingly. If you’ll be in Walt Disney World at a time when there will be more than one party occurring during your trip dates, look to see if one party is cheaper than the other and consider attending the less expensive party, if possible. Also, generally parties in September are less crowded than parties in October, and parties that take place on Tuesdays tend to be less crowded than parties that occur on other days of the week. In addition, if you’re on the fence about attending the event, consider that the Magic Kingdom closes earlier during party dates, (7:00 p.m. for day guests) and this may be one of your few opportunities to be in the Magic Kingdom after 9:00 p.m. during your trip.

Trick-or-treat bags are provided at the Magic Kingdom’s gates as you enter the party or at any of the candy stops, but the bags are on the small side and given the amount of candy you can trick-or-treat for, the bags often fill up very quickly. Consider bringing your own bag to avoid carrying several of Disney’s bags. If you’ll be using the Disney bag(s), be sure to grab extra ones as early as possible as, unlike candy, they tends to run out early. As an alternative, you can purchase larger trick-or-treat bags or plastic pumpkin buckets with Mickey ears at the Emporium to gather treats. One other tip is to buy popcorn in one of the Hitchhiking Ghost or Hatbox Ghost Mickey popcorn bucket (available at popcorn carts) to enjoy during the parade and then use the empty bucket to trick-or-treat afterwards. You could always bring your own trick-or-treat bags from home too, if you would prefer.

Also, avoid the weekends when the lines can get impossibly long; typically, the lightest crowds will be Monday through Thursday. If you are flying to get to your port destination, it is always recommended that you add a pre-cruise stay to your cruise itinerary. The reason behind this is because you may have possible flight delays. If you fly out the day of your cruise and have a flight delay, caused by any number of reasons, the cruise ship will not wait for you, and you will be out of luck. In addition, if you have missing luggage, you’ll potentially be without your clothes and toiletries. The best reason though to include a pre-cruise stay (even if it’s just one night) is that it allows you to start your vacation on the right note, giving you a chance to relax before boarding the ship. Plus, you’ll arrive at the port refreshed and ready for a great cruise experience.

If you’ll be visiting the Magic Kingdom during the very busy week between Christmas and New Years, here are a few tips to make your visit go smoother. If driving, note where you are parked; while this is true any time of the year, during the holidays, parking lots can get jammed-packed. If you’re staying at a Disney resort, utilize Disney transportation to get to the park and make sure to arrive at the early; park closures in the early afternoon are highly possible. To navigate around Main Street USA when entering the park, use the Walt Disney World Railroad. Eat during off-hours when the crowds are likely to be less and those staying at Disney resorts may want to plan on returning to their resorts late afternoon for dinner and a nap, then return to the park and enjoy the late hours when crowds are diminished. Enjoy yourself and take in some of the special entertainment offered this time of year. Finally, be patient and polite at this busy time of year.
